The deputy director of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands, Yolanda Perdomo, attended the presentation of the event, the only one in the Islands that gives the opportunity to participate at the Mexico World Championship.

The eighth edition of the Deep-Sea Fishing Tournament Marina Rubicón Marlin Cup starts this Thursday with 51 boats and 280 contestants.

The deputy director of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands, Yolanda Perdomo, attended the presentation of the event, the only one in the Islands to give the winner the opportunity of participating in the Mexico World Championship.

Lanzarote will host, from next Thursday 16th to Saturday 18th of September, the eighth edition of the Deep-Sea Fishing Tournament Marina Rubicón Marlin Cup, one of the Archipelago’s most prestigious tournaments and the only one that counts towards the World Championship that will take place in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, next year. There will be a total of 51 boats and 280 contestants fighting in the sea to win the highest prize of the competition.

Rafael Lasso, manager of Marina Rubicón, explained the above this Tuesday morning, and remarked that “the special characteristics of these days of competition, not only as regards the contest itself, but also as regards the important number of leisure activities that will take place on shore simultaneously, make the Marlin Cup a unique event in the current sports fishing world”.

As for the director of the event, José Suárez, he wanted to stress the philosophy that has dominated the competition during these past years, with the mark and release discipline, in which the contestants have to use appropriate techniques to ensure that the specimens that are caught are returned to the sea as soon as possible without being harmed. To achieve this, the organizers recommend the use of circle hooks and natural bait.

The deputy director of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands, Yolanda Perdomo, took the opportunity to stress the importance of this kind of events for the tourist promotion of the Islands, “that perfectly matches the diversification strategy launched by the regional Government, and which is part, in this case, of the Water Sports Experience label”. Perdomo reminded also about the importance of these initiatives to reach new markets and targets that have not been explored until now.

The prestigious American biologist and fisherman Bill Boyce will attend once more the Marina Rubicón Marlin Cup 2010. Boyce will be the judge during the days of competition, ensuring that the commitment and principles of responsible sport fishing and conservation of the marine environment are respected.

Organisers and prizes

Organised by Marina Rubicón Yachting Marina, Club Náutico Castillo del Águila and IGFA Offshore World Championship, the event is supported by the public institutions and private companies that each year help to promote this event and support the winning boats with their contributions.

The tournament is sponsored by the Tourism and Agriculture, Livestock, Fish and Food Departments of the Government of the Canary Islands; Patronato de Turismo del Cabildo de Lanzarote, Opel Orvecame, Mapfre, Marina Rubicón Village, Cicar, Gran Meliá Volcan Lanzarote and Hotel Princesa Yaiza. The Town Hall of Yaiza, Coca-Cola, Bodegas Stratus, Naviera Armas, Nortysur, Cash&Carry and Lanzarote Golf collaborate in the event.

The Tourism Department of the Government of the Canary Islands launched in 2009 a promotional strategy to make the exceptionality of the Canary Islands as water sports destination known. Worth mentioning within the strategic plan is the sponsorship program of water sports events that take place in its coasts, and which has made the islands an international reference point for these sports. The special wind, sun and wave conditions throughout the year make the Archipelago a unique destination in Europe for the practice of water sports, where sport fishing plays a prominent role.

The strategy of the Government of the Canary Islands focuses on two innovative initiatives: the Waters Sports Experience label, which certifies the quality, professionalism and safety of the products and services offered by all water sports related establishments that wish to adhere to it, and the Islas Canarias Water Sports Scuderia Project, which brings together under a unifying concept all the top-level sports and human assets of the Canary Islands

The winner will go to the Mexico World Championship

The team that gets the highest score, adding the images got on the two days of competition, except those excluded because they are protected specimens, will be the winner of the event, and will participate next May in the World Championship in Mexico. The winners will earn a trip to Mexico with all expenses paid to attend this competition thanks to the Tourism Department of the Cabildo de Lanzarote.
