Route through El Hierro
Although it is small, the island of El Hierro offers many options for you to try nordic walking or traditional hiking. One example is the path called Camino de Jinama, from the municipality of La Frontera, in the centre of the island. Most of the route follows stony paths that lead through a lot of vegetation, due to the moist conditions produced by the “horizontal rain” that often forms over the Valley of El Golfo.
Palm trees in Fuerteventura
In Fuerteventura you have the option of going by boat from the port of Corralejos to Lobos, a small volcanic islet, which is topped by the mountain called La Caldera. It is possible to walk round the island via a circular path, stopping on the opposite side of this small territory, at the lighthouse. Another option is to explore the plains of the centre of the island, from Tuineje to Tiscamanita, along an earth path, with the mountain of Tamasite behind you.
Walking in the Dunes of Gran Canaria
In Gran Canaria, for example, you can explore the impressive Dunes of Maspalomas, in the south of the island, armed only with a walking stick. In this natural space there are five sign-posted paths that make it possible to explore the most interesting parts of this natural protected area. Not only that, but the island geography is criss-crossed with an intricate network of footpaths of all types: from the easiest forest tracks and “royal roads” to bridle paths, country trails and lanes more suitable for expert hikers.
La Gomera, between the mountains
La Gomera is a very attractive island for those who love nature. We can choose a circular route that starts next to the Hermitage of Las Hayas. We will walk among orchards, pasture land and low mountain, and then through a natural forest in the area. The path takes us to a wide esplanade surrounded by trees, with a small picnic area.
Also, the National Park of Garajonay offers the hiker various routes through its leafy green landscapes, in one of the most distinctive forests in the archipelago, where there is a wide range of paths and clearly sign-posted look-out points.
La Palma, a hiking paradise
La Palma is a paradise for hikers. The experience of exploring the National Park Caldera de Taburiente, through the various paths that run throughout the impressive crater, with fascinating views of the interior of the Caldera, is an exceptional one. You can see black fields of ash, craters that ran with lava, and exotic rock formations, with the Atlantic Ocean in the background. We also recommend a walk through the enchanted forests, situated in the natural reserve of Los Tilos, in the north-east of the island. The route goes through a deep valley where it is possible to observe the endemic plant species, and enjoy spectacular views. You can end the walk in the Blue Pool (Charco Azul).
Walking on lava in Lanzarote
The Natural Park of the Volcanoes in Lanzarote offers us an excellent opportunity to get in shape while observing craters, lava flow, channels and volcanic tubes. And why not walk along the Valley of the Thousand Palms? This route, in the north of the island, starts with a visit to the Volcano of La Corona, and continues towards the Risco de Famara and the village of Máguez.
Tenerife, green routes
Tenerife has many footpaths. The one we recommend here begins in the small village of La Caleta, in the municipality of Adeje, and runs along the rocky beach of Varadero, through the beach of Los Morteros, to the beach of Diego Hernández. After that we take up the walk again as far as the Puertito de Armañime, where we can enjoy another marvellous beach.
